The Beloit College Mindset list for the class of 2014 is accurate in some aspects, but quite ridiculous in others. If a student thought all of these items were true, I would say they are quite foolish. I can identify with some of them, and some of them I have not heard of.
Some of the items that I think are accurate are:
· email is too slow
· Fergie is a pop-singer, not a princess
· “Viewer Discretion” has always been an available warning on TV shows.
· They have never worried about a Russian missile strike on the U.S.
Email is way too slow. When I need an answer to something, I would much rather use the speedy text message option. When has Fergie ever been a princess? Meet me halfway here; she is glamorous, but not royal. Ever since I can remember watching television, Mom and Dad have been there to say, “This is not for you.” If it was violent, fine. But come on, everyone needs a laugh now and then. Finally, the Russians are after us? I know of the complications with them in 1940’s, but I thought that was ancient.
Some of the items that are way off base are:
· The U.S, Canada, and Mexico have always agreed to trade freely.
· Toothpaste tubes have always stood up on their caps.
· They’ve never recognized that pointing to their wrists was a request for the time of day.
Hello, have we not ever studied economics? I thought everyone new about tariffs and quotas. The North American Free Trade Agreement didn’t launch until the early 1990’s. As for toothpaste, I remember the screw on caps; I was always too lazy to put it back on. As a final point, pointing at the wrist means nothing else in my book. If you want to know the time, give the sign.
A few of these items are rather funny, but it is the way that some of us think. Most of us should know that some of the items are inaccurate. It is interesting to see how the rest of the world views our mindset.
I totally agree with what you said about pointing at the wrist. I think this is pretty ridiculous as well because when I see that gesture, I know exactly what it means. I am pretty sure everyone one else does too.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all.. There is an actual Duchess of York, and her name is Sarah Ferguson. So, people have always called her "Fergie." That's where "our" Fergie started it. I would have never known this though, if I didn't watch Oprah with my mom. I remember Oprah interviewing Fergie, and I got excited, only to find out that it wasn't the Fergie I was thinking. So, yeah.. I will have to agree with that point, but I thought I would clear up that they were talking about a different person lol.
ReplyDeleteDarcy, I totally agree with you on the toothpaste standing on their caps. I remember when I was younger the only kind of toothpaste was the screw on caps!
ReplyDeleteI like Fergie and I agree with you that she is not a princess.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your points in your last half that you found inaccurate. As for the first half... Fergie.... I know nothing about.... guess its not my kind of thing. And in some cases, text messages are way better than email due to speed, but at the same time, its hard to write out long texts efficiently as a good email, and ya can't attach files! And the Russian missile thing.... well I've never HAD to worry about it... and I LIKE IT THAT WAY! lol
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with the pointing at the wrist comment you made. I remember using that multiple times in school during class. Once again my lack of being up-to-date is kinda showing, but I honestly wasn't even able to text til about 2 years ago, so email and straight up talking face-to-face is what I had available.
ReplyDeleteYa the wrist thing, totally bogus. I'm pretty sure that many generations from now, that signal will still be in use.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your list of what is true and not so true of the Beloit College Mindset list of the class of 2014. One thing that I would change is the Fergie is a pop-singer, not a princess to the list of not so accurate.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your toothpaste statement. I as well am still too lazy to screw the cap back on so I personally like the ones with the flippy caps.
ReplyDeleteFergie is a princess. The david guetta song she's in is da bomb.
ReplyDeleteYa I've never heard of another application for pointing at your wrist. For me it's always been to ask for the time
ReplyDeleteYa I never use email unless i have to for school. Usually just use facebook.
ReplyDeleteDarcy- I'm looking forward to reading your next few posts!
